Utah Inmate Records

Inmate search for Utah is enhanced through the Utah inmate records available to the public as per the Utah Government Records Access and Management Act

These records contain the documentation of an offender through the criminal system. The records emanate from the local law enforcement agencies, confinement facilities, and courts, among other entities.

Inmate records contain an incarcerated person’s demographic data, including name (includes aliases), gender, date of birth, race, religion, and physical description such as eye and hair color, tattoos, and other defining marks. The records also contain the inmate’s current confinement facility, case details, and upcoming events.

The Utah Department of Corrections oversees and manages the state prisons and county jails. The department’s mandate is to ensure that such information is accessible to the public upon request.

Utah Individual In-Custody Locator Tool

The Utah Department of Corrections offers an online individual in-custody locator tool that you can use to search for an inmate in the state. The search procedure includes entering the inmate’s name or their UDC number. You need to agree to a disclaimer before beginning the search process. You can narrow the search details to a specific inmate by entering the nickname, aliases, and date of birth.

Most jails in Utah contain an independent online search tool that can help you to search for an inmate. The information you can obtain using these search tools includes the inmate’s name, arrest, current facility, primary charges, booking information, court details, sentence, release date, and upcoming parole details (if any), among others.

Utah’s Jail & Prison System

Utah has seven state-owned prisons, one holding women while the remaining six are for men. Each state-owned facility has different units with varying security levels ranging from low, medium, to maximum securities. The Utah Department of Corrections oversees and manages inmate correctional facilities in the state.

The state also has nineteen county jails for confining individuals awaiting trials and short-sentence inmates- mostly less than one year. The county and Sheriff’s offices run and oversee the activities of county jails.

The state has approximately 14,000 inmates behind bars. Around 6,500 are confined in state prisons, while local county jails hold about 5,700 inmates. There is one federal prison in Utah holding approximately 1,500 inmates. The federal inmate is under the management of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
