South Carolina State Departament Of Corrections Inmate Search

Updated on: February 24, 2024

The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) oversees all the state and county jails. There are twenty-one state prisons and fifty jails holding more than twenty thousand offenders across the state. The agency provides custody and care for all the inmates in the correctional facilities.

South Carolina also has nine private prisons that hold around five thousand inmates. The state has four federal prisons and four federal prison camps. The Federal Bureau of Prisons' Southeast Regional Office manages the federal correctional facilities. Most of the offenders in the state are in county jails.

The state prisons are categorized according to security levels depending on the risks the inmates pose to the public. They include level 1 to level 3, which holds the most violent offenders.  Level 1 holds less violent criminals or those who pose the least risk to the public.

Like in most other states, the offenders are provided services and programs to make them responsible citizens when released. The department's behavioral and substance abuse division offers the right treatment services to offenders with substance abuse and behavioral problems.

Inmates are provided with vocational and educational training to allow them to learn the right job skills and vocational certificates. None violent and other offenders who have committed minor crimes undergo the programs for ninety days, after which they get parole.

South Carolina Inmate Lookup Tool

You can perform an inmate search in South Carolina over the phone or online.  Online, you will use the inmate lookup tool using the inmate's SCDC number or full name.

The county jails have an inmate list or jail roster. You can search using the name and Identification of the inmate. You can visit the jail to find the inmate if you don't have the information. Alternatively, you can call the sheriff's department to help with the search.

How to Contact an Inmate in South Carolina

You can contact an inmate in South Carolina by email.  Visit www.ConnectNetwork.comand and create an account. Once your account is activated, you can purchase email credit to send the emails to the inmate. An inmate is also able to return the message.

You can also receive a call from an inmate. To receive a call, set up a pre-paid account with GTL (Global Tel*Link) ConnectNetwork on their website. All phone calls are recorded.

Sending mail is another way to contact an inmate. Ensure to include the inmate's full name, I.D. number, correctional facility name, address, and return address. You shouldn't include anything other than a letter or photo in the mail.

Sending Money

All transactions between relatives and inmates in South Carolina must be cashless. You can send money to the inmate's trust account via GTL financial services. You can also send by phone deposit by calling (888) 988-4768 and following the prompts. Alternatively, you can deposit into the inmate's account at a retail location.

Another option to send money is through money orders.  You should download, fill out and send the slip.

The methods for sending money in county jails differ. Some use GTL's ConnectNetwork, while others have other authorized vendors. You should contact the specific jail to get the exact details of how to send the money.

Visitation

The South Carolina Department of Corrections allows visitation under certain guidelines and rules. These rules help promote your safety and that of the inmates. You will be required to get a visiting application form from the inmate you want to visit.  Inmates are advised to send these forms to the people they want to receive as visitors.

Once you send the application, the visitation department approves or denies you a chance to visit the facility. When approved, you should schedule a visit using GTL fifteen hours before. During the visit, you must present valid photo identification.

For jail visitations, you should contact the specific jail you want to visit. This is because jails have different visitation rules. However, you must present valid Identification and dress accordingly when visiting all detention centers.
