The crime rate in Rhode Island is lower than most of the other States in the US. The crime rate stands at 1,756 crimes per 100,000 people. The state ranks sixth lowest for property crime and seventh for violent crime. The rate is lower than the average nationwide rate.
The prisons and jails in the State are mandated to help reduce crimes by incarcerating and rehabilitating offenders.
Rhode Island State Inmate Search by Name
The Rhode Island Department of Corrections has a central online repository that helps in inmate search in the state correctional facilities. You can search for an inmate by full name or identification number. It’s advisable to search using the name since you get more search results, including age, race, and sex. Note that juvenile records aren’t public.
You can search through the local police department websites. All other details can be found on the Rhode Island Department of Corrections website. Unless you are an immediate family member of the inmate, you cannot search for the inmate’s release date. The best you can get is the month and year of release.
Rhode Island Prison and Jail System
The State has a unified system with integrated state-level prison and jail systems. There are no federal prisons. The county jails and prisons are managed by The Rhode Island Department of Corrections. The agency provides care and custody of all the inmates in these correctional facilities, which are seven prisons and seven county jails.
The Sherriff’s office and police departments operate the county jails in each county. There is also a pre-release center located in Cranston. This is a halfway house for inmates who are almost completing their sentence. It offers the offenders the support and resources to allow them to transition back into the community.
Rhode Island Prison and Jail System has three divisions: administration, rehabilitative services, and division of operations and institutions. Each division is mandated to ensure that the prisons and jails are run effectively. Furthermore, they are also responsible for ensuring the welfare of the inmates.
The system offers inmates programs such as substance abuse counseling, medical treatment, chaplaincy, and other supported services aimed at helping offenders change their behaviors and become responsible citizens after release.
How to Contact an Inmate in Rhode Island
Inmates in Rhode Island cannot receive calls, but they are allowed to call persons on their calling list. The inmates can either make prepaid or collect calls. They need to use an advance pay prepaid account to make a prepaid call. The other option is to use the money in the telephone debit account. You can only talk to an inmate on the phone for twenty minutes.
You can also correspond with an inmate through mail. Ensure you include their full name, ID number, correctional facility address, and return address in the mail. Note that mail is read and monitored by the authorities.
Send Money
You can send money to an inmate through MoneyGram with receive code 5558. You can also send money online through JPAY and Access Corrections.
Another option to send money is through a money order sent through the mail. Include the inmate ID number and full name.
Visiting an Inmate
Inmates in Rhode Island are given the privilege of being visited. The Rhode Island Department of Corrections can deny, approve or revoke this privilege. If you violate any state law or rules by the correctional facilities, you can be banned from making the visits.
Each facility has its schedule of the time, days, lengths, and locations for visits. The administrators conduct background checks to find out if you have criminal records. Once you get approved, you should inform the facility in advance before the visiting day.
You must present valid government identity documents at the reception during the visit. All visitors undergo a thorough search at the entrance. Electronic items will not be allowed in the facilities, and neither is a visitor allowed to give or be given anything by the inmate.
