In 2016, Oklahoma had the highest incarceration percentage in the US. However, the prison population has been reduced because of the reforms done in its parole system. Eligible inmates are released early before the date. The reforms to parole have led to a 14 percent decrease in the prison population. 

More work is needed to reduce Illinois's prison population and crime. This is necessary because there are still staffing shortages and operational issues within the prison and jail system. Let's look at the prison and jail systems in the state. 

How to Perform Inmate Search in Oklahoma 

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections maintains records in all the state prisons on its site public. You can perform inmate searches using the Oklahoma inmate search tool. The tool allows you to search using the inmate's birth date, name, and identification number.  

County jails are run by the Sheriff's office, while the local police department manages the city jails. You can use the online jail roster to search for an inmate in jail. Another option is to call or visit the specific jail to search for the inmate.  

Contacting an Inmate  

You can contact an inmate by sending a letter. The letter should feature the inmate's name, correctional facility address, and ODOC number on the envelope. All mails are inspected and read to ensure they adhere to set guidelines.  

Inmates cannot receive calls but are allowed to make calls to persons listed on their calling list. Calls are made through Global Tel*Link (GTL). You should create an account with the provider to be able to receive a call from an inmate. In an emergency, you should only contact the inmate's case manager.  

Oklahoma Prison and Jail System  

The state has ninety-three jails in 77 counties. At the end of 2019, Oklahoma had a 10,670 jail population. There are twenty-four state prisons, which had a population of 25,679 at the same time. Furthermore, the state has Community Corrections System that houses persons on probation and under parole. All the state prisons are managed by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (DOC).  

Oklahoma also has three federal prisons and one federal prison camp. These prisons have a capacity of 2,352 inmates. The South Central Regional Office manages each federal prison.  

Oklahoma Department of Corrections provides take custody for offenders in state prisons and those on parole and probation. The department is also responsible for managing inmates sentenced to prison but waiting to be moved to the state facility.  

The average sentence duration in Oklahoma prisons is three years and four months. Like most other states, Oklahoma inmates are housed based on their security risk levels. There is maximum security for those who pose the greatest safety risks to the public. Others are the medium and minimum security levels.  

The Prison and Jail System also has community correctional centers that offer housing and programming for low-risk inmates nearing their release date. The centers are near the offender's residence to allow family visitation.

Visiting an Inmate  

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections has a visitation policy. You should first fill out a visitor's request form and wait to be approved. After approval, schedule the visit by email or call. Inform the staff of the date of your visit.  

If you are under 18, you can only visit an inmate accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. You should present approved government identification documents such as a passport or military cards during the visits. Minors should present their birth certificates. Personal items and electronics aren’t allowed inside the correctional facility.
