How to Contact an Inmate in North Carolina

North Carolina laws allow general population inmates, except in central prisons, to make prepaid and outgoing calls to family and friends. The inmate’s housing assignment and custody level determine the number of calls one is allowed to make. Each inmate call is monitored and recorded.

Inmates can’t receive incoming calls. You need to contact the facility staff in case of emergencies, such as serious illnesses or the passing of a family member, for verification of the situation.

You can purchase prepaid telephone talk time for an inmate using Global Tel Link by reaching them through the company’s official contacts.

Visiting an Inmate

North Carolina acknowledges the essence of family and friends visiting their incarcerated loved ones. However, you must be on the approved visitor list to see an inmate in North Carolina. Follow the visiting rules, including filling out the appointment application form and waiting for approval. Ensure that you observe an acceptable dress code. Minors under 16 years must be in the company of an adult when visiting an incarcerated person.

Sending Money

There are different ways that you can use to send money to an inmate, including the following:

  • By walk-in
  • Mail
  • Phone
  • Through the internet

NCDPS has collaborated with JPay to allow friends and family members to send their incarcerated loved ones money. You can only send money orders as the law prohibits inmates from holding physical money.
