New York's incarceration rate stands at 376 per 100,000 people. These individuals are held in jails, prisons, juvenile justice facilities, and immigration detention centers. NY has at least 91,000 inmates serving terms for various crimes.   

According to a report published by New York State Controller Thomas DiNapoli, the prison population of New York decreased by 50% between March 2008 and March 2021. The same report also showed a slight increase in the population of inmates aged above 50 years. The population of incarcerated elderly persons grew from 7,511 to 7586 during this period.  

New York Online Inmate Lookup Service

New York City has a 24-hour online inmate lookup service that you can use to get information about a specific inmate in any correctional facility. NYSDCCS has also availed an automated inmate locator tool on its website that quickly finds an inmate.  

You can search an inmate using their details, including their first and last name, DIN, or NYSID. You can narrow your search results by including the inmate's birth date if you search by name.  

The search results show an inmate's details by their name, unique NYSID number, and supervision status. The search also allows you to enter the inmate's aliases or nicknames for more specific results. Find out more information about the inmate you're searching for by clicking "View Details." The additional that you can access about the inmate includes the following; 

  • Mugshot 
  • Hair and eye color  
  • Inmate's race 
  • Weight & height 
  • Education  
  • Religion  
  • Name of the facility charges 
  • Parole and probation date (if any)  

You can also find an inmate by visiting the local jail or searching online using a third-party website or the county Sheriff's official website. Third-party websites such as InfoTracer help you locate an inmate in New York quickly by following the website's search procedure.

New York Inmate Records  

The New York inmate records comprise digital files, paperwork, court records, and physical evidence of each inmate in the criminal justice system. These records may include video and audio clips, DNA samples, police reports, forms, trial documents, arrest warrants, and an inmate's sentencing.  

The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (NYSDCCS) takes charge of inmate records, incarceration facilities, and inmates. Inmate records can also be accessed through third-party agencies with active contracts with local law enforcement agencies.  

New York Prison and Jail System 

NYS has several correctional facilities, including drug treatment programs, prisons, and maximum, medium, and normal-security facilities. Some detention facilities serve as community correctional offices where individuals on probation or parole check-in.  

At least six correctional facilities hold women, while 50 hold men. The state also has sixteen detention and treatment centers serving short-term sentences to inmates and individuals waiting for court trials and hearings.

The jail system prohibits inmates from owning electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets, phablets, and laptops. However, inmates can receive mail and packages from friends, family, and loved ones, but you must adhere to the set rules when sending mail.  

NY has also enacted the Securus phone calls program that allows you to prepay for an incarcerated loved one.  

Visiting an Inmate 

NY encourages family members and close friends to visit inmates. These jails have dedicated facilities to make such visits comfortable. However, you must follow the guidelines and rules if you're planning to visit an inmate in New York correctional facilities.

Sending Money to an Inmate  

New York correctional facilities allow inmates to receive money from their loved ones. However, the inmates cannot possess paper and coin money on them. Each inmate has an individual account where they keep their money and use it to purchase the things they need.
