Initial Appointments and Sessions

Scheduling Initial Appointments
The Mental Health Department uses an intake screening process which provides a single point of entry for all consumers requesting Mental Health or ADAPT services. When an individual calls or comes in to request services they will speak first to an intake worker. The intake worker will collect general background information, a brief description of the services requested, and insurance coverage information. Based on this information, and the nature of the services requested, the individual will be provided with a therapist that best meets their unique needs. The therapist will then contact the individual, usually within 24 hours, to schedule an initial appointment.
The first appointment is scheduled with the individual's therapist. Individuals are requested to arrive early for their first appointment to complete the necessary paperwork. The individual receiving services, or the accompanying adult, will need to bring with them their health insurance card, proof of income, names and dosage of all medications, and proof of identity. In most cases, children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent for their initial appointment. Before the individual meets with their therapist they are asked to fill out some brief questionnaires which will provide the therapist with important information. These forms ask about health status, family history, personal concerns and in the case of children, developmental history. The individual will then meet with their therapist or counselor to begin identifying treatment goals and start the treatment process.
