How to Conduct for an Inmate in Massachusetts State

Massachusetts does not have its search websites for inmates. It relies on Vine Link services or the option of calling through the vine link or making a direct call to the specific facility in which the inmate may be incarcerated.

How you go about it:

  • Visit the victim information and notification daily (VINE), an online portal for the public and crime victims. Armed with a few details about the inmate, you can search where they are being held. The requirements for a successful search include full names as stated in the inmate ID and ID number. Their alias or partial names may also help.
  • After adding the inmate's names to the search database, a bunch of names similar to what you have entered will come up. Pick on the names that pique your interest. You will get the dates when the dates the offender was put in custody. If this is not helpful, you can call through the vine link service and speak to a person who may help narrow down the search.

How to Contact an Inmate

The Massachusetts department of corrections allows for communication between inmates and their loved ones in a variety of ways, including:

  • Letters sent through the postal service
  • Email sent through corrlinks
  • Phone

You need to include the inmates' full names; their comment numbers are part of the address. Inmates also have access to emails from loved ones through Corrlinks. Inmates have to create an account with corrlinks, after which a charge of $0.25 is paid per email. It is worth noting that inmates cannot initiate email contact but can reply.

In terms of making phone calls, inmates have to get their friends and loved ones to set up an account with Securus Technology and fund it for an inmate to make a phone call.

Sending Money to an Inmate in Massachusetts

There are several ways you can get money from an inmate in Massachusetts. Loved ones have access to third-party vendors who help get money to inmates through the mail, phone, or online deposits.

Friends and loved ones have to sign into Access Corrections, which provides an app for both apple and android which can be used to deposit money to the inmate's commissary account. For call-in payments, friends and loved ones must log onto (866) 345-1884, a toll-free line active 24/7 in both English and Spanish. Only credit and debit cards can be used for online and call-in payments.

There is also an option for mail-in payments for people looking to deposit money through cheques or money orders. These will be cleared within 48 hours after the finalization of transfers. However, the cheques will be held for ten days before MADOC credits them to the inmates' accounts.

Visitation

First, confirm that the inmate is held in that specific facility you want to visit and also ensure you are well versed with the guidelines for visitors to the facility.

Potential visitors must also be on the inmates' pre-approved visitation list. This is done by downloading and filling out the inmates' visitor application form from where the inmates are incarcerated. The inmate then decides whether the visitor should come for a visit. Minors and persons under 18 years are exempted from the pre-approval list but must be accompanied by a legal guardian for a visit.

There are a couple of rules necessary for any visitors, including:

  • Dressing appropriately for a visit like you are attending an official meeting.
  • Proper identification is required for all visitors. This will include an id, driver's license, passport, and birth certificate in case you bring a minor over.
  • You should also ensure you are preapproved for a visit. This can be done by contacting prison officials.
  • Always arrive at the facility well before visitation time, at least four hours before.
