The state of Louisiana has an incarceration rate of over 1,000 per 100,000 people. The incarceration rate of this state is amongst the highest in the world. Currently, over 50,000 people are behind bars in Louisiana. 

Each year over 86,000 people are booked into local jails in the state. More than 33% of the people who are in jail in the state are blacks.  

How to find an Inmate in Louisiana Jails 

To search for an inmate in any of the jails in Louisiana jails, you need an internet-enabled device. The state has an inmate locator that gives information about all inmates that are currently in jail in the state. However, you should not worry if you do not have internet, you can walk directly into any of the state’s facilities and enquire about a loved one. 

Visitation Rules and Frequency in Louisiana 

Visitors into any of the prisons in Louisiana have to be 18 years of age or above. However, a parent or their legal guardian can accompany a minor. All adults must come with a photo ID issued by the government. 

Do not visit while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Recording devices or cell phones will not be allowed in the state's facilities. If there is any form of third-party visitation, it will result in the termination of the visit.  

You must dress appropriately when coming to any of the state’s prison. 

Inmates will only have visits when not in their cells. An inmate should inform his or her visitors when they are free. Inmates should lock in their units regardless of when a visit is scheduled. 

All visitors to the facilities will be searched, and minors will have to be accompanied by their parents or guardians. Minor will not get access to any of the facilities if they are a victim or witness in a case against an inmate. Child visits count towards the weekly visitation allotment. The children must stay under control all the time. Disruptions created by children will lead to the suspension of the visit.  

Money is not allowed in the visiting room, but you can buy a vending card in A- building. The vending card is five dollars. You can then load money into the card up to 50 dollars.  

The visit will end with a failure to follow the set rules and guidelines set by the authorities. The facility may decide to ban a visitor for a lifetime for breach of these rules. 

Funding an Inmate 

There are several ways to put money in an inmate’s commissary account when they are in a Louisiana prison. However, you should have an inmate’s full details before you send money. You have to get their ID’s and names correctly. You cannot send money via mail. 

Moreover, the prisons in Louisiana allow for cash as long as you deposit it directly in the lobby, and the authorities will keep it safe until the inmate needs it. 

Correspondence with an Inmate 

Sending and receiving mail is a good way for inmates to connect with the outside world. All letters to the jails in Louisiana should go through the US Postal Service. Most of the facilities in the state will not allow any letters in during visitation. The authorities will check for contraband in all the letters.  

Magazines and books to the facility have to come from the distributor or publisher. Moreover, the inmates get children’s drawings, stamps, photographers, calendars, and newspapers. Ensure you address the letter correctly, as the facility will not be responsible for any lost package or mail.
