Visitation 

Most of the Kansas state prisons allow visitors into the facility mostly on weekends from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. However, visitors need to get prior approval from the wardens to gain entry. Requirements include full names, residency, and relationships with the inmates.  

Only adults are allowed entry into the facilities. Minors can gain entry only when accompanied by a parent or guardian. The average waiting time for approval is one month. It is advisable not to wear offensive or distracting clothing when visiting. Prohibited clothing includes headbands, hats, hooded sweaters, clothes bearing symbols and pictures, and very tight clothes.

However, there have been many complaints about the high cost of sending money to Kansas prisons. The average fee that most of the facilities is 19% for a $20 online transfer. However, the more you send the rates go down to around $10.

How to Contact an Inmate 

Kansas state prisons allow inmates to talk to their loved ones, clergy, and lawyers through calls while in prison. Most of the calls are collect calls, and the receiver will have to bear the cost. The Kansas prison system allows inmates to buy pre-paid cards to call their attorneys.  

The majority of the calls will be limited to 30 minutes and 300 minutes the entire month. The calls take place between 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Any form of fraud, harassment, or three-way calling will lead to the termination of the call. It may also lead to prosecution, which may lead to fines or even sentencing.  

Kansas prison system is generous enough, and they allow the inmates an extra 100 minutes during holidays to call friends and family.  

Another way to contact an inmate in a Kansas prison is through correspondence. Letters will have to undergo inspection for contraband. Ensure the letter has a return address, failure to which it will not be accepted.
