Iowa Prisons and Jail System

The Iowa Department of Corrections oversees nine state prisons with a capacity of about 8200 inmates. Each prison has a varying security level for high and low-risk inmates. The state operates satellite facilities too. The state is divided into eight districts with correctional facilities stretched within them. The Department of Correction in Iowa also recognizes and funds these eight district departments supervising approximately 30,800 people in a community daily. It is also responsible for inspecting jails, prison industries, and non-profit programs that teach job skills to inmates.

Iowa has several community offices to supervise inmates released on probation or parole.

Federal prisons have a capacity of about 3,700 inmates. There are about 4,300 inmates in county jails supervised by local law enforcement and Sheriffs. These are mostly inmates convicted of misdemeanors or those awaiting trial for felonies that are not severe. Serious misconduct is punishable by up to a year in jail. One can be sentenced to up to two years for aggravated misdemeanors and serve their time in county jails. Those interested in contacting offenders in county jails should contact the county sheriff or jail administrator. Counties such as Dallas, Hardin, and Story have their information about jails on their websites, where the public can access them.

Iowa Inmate Records

Iowa inmate records are public. Iowa Department of Corrections has an online inmate search tool to find anyone held within the state. Anyone using this search tool will be required to fill out the inmate’s full name, date of birth, gender, inmate number, and the crime they committed. For more information, click on the inmate’s name. The mugshot cannot be seen, but all the other information is available, including the offender’s crimes, sentencing, and possible probation or parole dates.

There are also third-party search tools like Info Tracer.

Visiting Inmates

The Iowa Department of Corrections has to approve anyone planning to visit. For approval, all adults have to submit a filled application form to the department. Minors should be registered on the visitor application form submitted by a legal guardian. If you have any questions on visitation, check the visitation policy or call the Iowa centralized visitation number 319-385-9511.

Victims of inmates thinking of visiting can learn more about how to do it here.

Contacting Inmates

The department of corrections provides phone services for inmates to communicate with their loved ones. The charges for this service are lower than in other states, which is reflected in the rates charged for its use. The Iowa law permits the department to maintain an inmate cell phone fund, and its proceeds are used to benefit the inmates. These funds are used as directed by the board of corrections to benefit offenders through legal services, religious accommodations, education, and victim services. Sending Money

You can deposit money in the form of a money order or cashier’s check. The money orders and cashier’s checks should be payable to the Iowa Department of Correction’s offender Fiduciary Account. The sender should include the offender’s name, id number, sender’s name, and complete address. The deposit will be returned to the sender if it does not follow the set guidelines.

The department does not accept cashier’s checks and money orders dropped off at any facility. They should be mailed to the facility instead. Inmates always receive receipts of deposits as per the current guidelines. Iowa Department of Corrections accepts money transfers from Western Union for inmate accounts but not telephone accounts. Money can be sent by phone, walk-in cash payment at any Western Union shop, or through the internet.

Family or friends of an inmate can also send money to offenders through access corrections or jpay.

In case of inmate transfer, the inmate’s funds will immediately be available in the new facility.
