Indiana State Departament Of Corrections Inmate Search

Updated on: February 22, 2024

Indiana Prisons and jail system is managed by the Indiana Department of Correction. State prisons in Indiana hold inmates sentenced to more than a year. This department oversees about 27,400 inmates, including juvenile offenders. There are 34 correctional facilities in Indiana, of which 18 are adult correctional facilities, 13 work release centers, and 3 for juveniles.

The Indiana Department of Correction offers need-based programs to inmates. This includes parenting programs, drug abuse treatment programs, apprenticeships, and specialized training, e.g. organic gardening and culinary arts. The department also consists of the Diversity and Development division. This unit deals with improving inclusion and equity to create a safe work environment for everyone.

Indiana county jails hold people incarcerated for misdemeanors for a short period up to one year. Jails also hold inmates awaiting trial. County jails are smaller than state prisons since they are designed to hold a small number of inmates for a short time. There are up to 92 county jails in Indiana. These jails are run by local agencies like local police.

There are two federal prisons and one prison camp. The Federal Bureau of Prisons oversees these federal prisons. There are more state prisons in Indiana than in federal ones since most crimes fall under the state’s jurisdiction. The federal prisons offer mental health programs, drug abuse treatment programs, religious education, sexual abuse prevention, and re-entry programs.

Indiana Inmate Search

The Indiana Department of Correction is in charge of keeping inmate records. The department makes this information easily available on its website.

The easiest way to search for an inmate held in Indiana is to visit the Indiana Department of Correction’s online offender search tool, then enter their first or last name. The search result on the website will include the inmate’s name, ID number, date of birth, sex, race, and the facility they are housed. For more information, e.g. charges and release date, click on the offender’s IDOC number.

Contacting Inmates

Inmates in most facilities are allowed to make outgoing prepaid or collect calls through a third-party company. No inmate can receive incoming calls. Family and friends cannot receive regular incoming calls from inmates through cell phones. This only happens when they use the prepaid collect calls options.

The Department of Corrections in Indiana uses GTL phone service providers. To set up an account, visit website or call 1-800-483-8314. GTL charges a feel for all calls. To reduce the bills for phone calls, you can set up an account with a number local to the prison.

In case of a family emergency such as death, call the facility where the inmate is held, ask for the chaplain, explain why you are calling, and they may help you.

Family and friends can send mail to inmates, but there are also rules on sending mail and packages.

Sending Money

Inmates held in Indiana prisons can receive money in the form of a postal money order payable to JPAY. When sending the money order, friends and family should ensure that they write the inmate’s name and Id number on the money order. They should also fill out an inmate’s deposit form.

Inmate Visitation

All visitors are subjected to review after submitting their visitor application form. The Indiana Department of Corrections reviews the visitor’s criminal history, employment, and relation to the inmate. Upon approval, visitors can request an appointment with the inmate. Visitation days and rules will also be given to the inmate’s loved one.

When the paper application provided by inmates is approved, visitors have to schedule online and physical visitations. This online account should be created before the paper application has been approved. Those registered for video visitation through GTL do not have to register.
