Hawaii has four state prisons, namely Waiawa Correctional Facility, Kulani Correctional Center, Halawa Correctional Facility, and the Women’s Community Correctional Center. These correctional facilities house approximately 7000 inmates.

The state also has four jails namely Hawaii Community Correctional Center, Oahu Community Correctional Center, Maui Community Correctional Center, and Kauai Community Correctional Center. Every major island has one jail.

The jails hold prisoners before trial and those serving shorter sentences for misdemeanors. They also sometimes hold inmates temporarily before moving to other facilities or completing their sentences. Both male and female offenders are held in these jails.

All jails and prisons are supervised and managed by the State of Hawaii Department of Public Safety, Corrections Divisions.
