Georgia State Departament Of Corrections Inmate Search

Georgia has a violent crime rate of 3.26 per 1,000, which is approximately 12 percent lower than the national crime rate. However, property crime rates are 17 percent above the national level. It's ranked as one of the safest states in the US because of its low crime rates. The Georgia Department of Corrections serves and protects the residents by managing and rehabilitating the offenders.  

Inmate Lookup Tool in Georgia 

The Georgia Department of Corrections maintains all inmate records in the state. You can do an inmate search using the Georgia inmate lookup tool for free. However, the tool only shows records for adult inmates. Juvenile records are unavailable to the public unless the juvenile has committed a federal or felony crime.  

You can search inmates by name, identification number, and case number. You can also search using third-party tools such as InfoTracer. 

Sheriff's offices manage county jails in Georgia. Thus, inmate search in jails differs from one county to the other. Most offices create a full list of current inmates, while others have online search tools. For example, Union County publishes its inmates online, while Fulton County has a search portal.  

Georgia Prison and Jail System  

The Georgia Department of Corrections runs transitional centers, prisons, probation, and drug disorder treatment centers. State offenders are held at county and private correction facilities.   

Georgia has 34 state prisons across the entire state. The state prisons hold repeat violent or nonviolent offenders. Judges can sentence offenders to prison, where they can access classes and other services that allow them to return to society successfully.  

The state has three tiered jail and prison system, including: 

  • State prisons run by the Georgia Department of Corrections 
  • Private prisons that are contracted to private companies  
  • County jails managed by individual counties  

The state department of corrections manages all the county jails and prisons. The county jails differ in size, with the largest one holding over three thousand inmates.  

Georgia has five federal prisons and two federal prison camps. Approximately 3,031 offenders are held in federal prisons. These prisons hold inmates convicted of breaking federal laws. On the other hand, state prisons are governed by state governments and hold persons who break state laws.  

Prisons are classified into three categories: 

  • Close security: Offenders with a high risk of escape require close monitoring.  
  • Medium security: Offenders who require supervision but can be allowed to work in community programs. 
  • Minimum security: Offenders pose the least risk. 

Contacting an Inmate  

You can contact an inmate in Georgia by sending mail. All mails are opened and inspected to enhance the safety of the correctional facility. You should include the inmate's full name and the facility's postal address.  

You cannot call an inmate, but the inmate can call if you are on their call list. For an emergency, you should contact the chaplain to relay information to the inmate.  

Sending Money  

You can only send money to an inmate if you are on the approved list. Inmates are allowed to have five people who can send money to them. To send money, you can use MoneyGram or JPay. For MoneyGram, you need to use 6857, the GDC receiver code. You can also send money using money orders by mail. Money orders usually take a fortnight to process. 

You should include the inmate's full name, prison number, and the prison. The County sheriff's office manages jails and rules on how to send money. So, the methods differ from one county to the other.  

Visiting an Inmate  

The Georgia Department of Corrections manages visitations in Georgia. If you intend to visit an inmate, you should apply for visitor's privilege. The application must be approved by the department. If you fill in false or wrong information, the application is rejected. When the application is approved, you can make an appointment to visit.  

When making the visitation appointment, you should include your full name, relationship with the inmate, identification, and email address. Visitation is allowed on weekends and holidays. You must follow the rules and guidelines of the Georgia Department of Corrections regarding parking, dress code, and security screening.  

The procedure for visiting varies from one county to the other. For instance, in Fulton County, inmate visit is through remote video conferencing, while some other counties allow for physical visits.
