Colorado State Departament Of Corrections Inmate Search

Updated on: April 25, 2024

The number of crimes in Colorado has been increasing for about ten years. Violent crimes, including robberies, homicides, sex, and aggravated assaults, increased by 17% from 2019 to 2021. Murder cases increased up to 47% at the same time.

Property crime increased by 20%, while car theft increased by 86%. An analysis conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation between 2019 and 2020 revealed that the State had the fourth-highest increased crime rates in the USA.

With the rising crime in the state, the Prisons and jails have been reformed to help reduce the high crime rates.

Colorado Prison and Jail System

Jail System

There are 61 jails in the 64 counties in Colorado. The jails are located near courthouses, housing persons who have been arrested awaiting trial or serving misdemeanor sentences. Jail inmates convicted of major crimes are then moved to state prisons. The county sheriff manages all county jails in the State. In most instances, both misdemeanor and felony convictions lead to probation.

If a person is convicted of a misdemeanor case and sentenced to serve in custody, they are taken to county jail. There are several cities or county-run jails in the State. Smaller towns have holding facilities where newly booked arrestees are held. If they fail to bail out, they are moved to a jail in a nearby city.

Prison system

The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDC) has twenty-one facilities for inmates. Nineteen facilities are run by the State, while two are private. As of December 31, 2019, Colorado had 19,785 prisoners in local and private jails. Most of the prisons in Colorado are located in rural areas, housing people with felons or felony convictions.

The Colorado Department of Corrections manages the prison system. Colorado prison sentences are longer than jail sentences and can be a lifetime, depending on the felony committed. For instance, sex offenses are indeterminate sentences since they don't have a release date for the inmate.

Inmate In-Custody Locator in Colorado State

You can search for an inmate in Colorado using the prison system's Inmate in-custody Locator. There are official records with information on persons booked, detailed, or incarcerated at the State or County levels. In accordance with the Colorado Open Records Act, the records are available to the public.

The records show the inmate's name, recent mugshot, physical descriptions, and details of their conviction and sentence. Furthermore, you will find their assigned facility, parole eligibility, and release date.

The Colorado Department of Correction allows the public to access inmate details through a prison lookup tool. You can perform a free search using the inmate's name or DOC number. Another option to search for an inmate in Colorado is to call (719) 226-488.

You can access inmate records from traditional governmental agencies and third-party organizations and websites. The websites offer an easier search since they don't have geographical limitations. However, since they aren't government-sponsored, the details obtained might differ from government channels.

To get inmate records using third-party sites, provide the location of the record you are searching for and include the State, County, and City where the inmate lives, as well as the inmate's name.

You could also search through the county Sheriff's website or city police. Depending on the county, the search tool may allow you to search using the booking number, name, charges, or bonds. You can also obtain information on inmates by sending a request to your city police department.

Visiting an Inmate

You can visit an inmate in Colorado if your name is on the inmate's approved visitors list. You should visit the administration office to complete the application form. If you are under 18, you must submit a visitation form bearing your guardian or parent's signature permitting the visit.

Contacting an Inmate

Colorado allows inmate contact via email, telephone, or US mail. You can only do this once you know the facility the inmate is being held, and you will have to follow departmental rules. Messages sent through US mail should have the inmate's name, number, return address, facility mailing address, and name.

For email, you need to have an active JPay account and the DOC number of the inmate. Phone calls are also allowed via the Colorado Inmate Phone System.

Sending Money

You can send money over the phone or online with a debit or credit card. The Colorado Department of Corrections collaborates with Western Union, JPay, and GTL to offer efficient electronic methods to send money to the inmates.
